Whether that’s your staff members, external staff or clients, freeing up space can help keep the place organised and clean.

With that in mind, here are a few ways in which you can free up space as a business so that you don’t need to worry about injured employees or setting the wrong impression for your guests.

1. Look at downsizing or upsizing depending on your needs

Downsizing or upsizing is definitely something that’s good to do, depending on what needs you have for your business.

When you’re downsizing, you might be doing so in order to reduce the amount of unnecessary space you have or to force yourself to rethink what you have in the space to fit a smaller one in general.

Upsizing is necessary for many businesses as they grow from their infancy to big corporations with a lot of employees to boot. With upsizing, it’s good to be mindful of what location you choose and to make sure everything fits into the space as you’d want it.

    2. Have flexible working arrangements

With flexible working arrangements for staff, it gives you the flexibility that you need as a business, to free up the space within your space.

For example, you might be operating on a smaller scale when it comes to your business, but have a lot more employees than you do available desks. While hot desking can be appropriate for some businesses, others might benefit more from having some staff work from home the majority of the time, or all the time in some cases.

Flexible working arrangements are helpful and have become widely popular since the pandemic.

    3. Stay on top of the cleaning schedule and cleaners

Staying on top of the cleaning schedule is certainly an important part of freeing up space as a business. Clutter can get in the way, but a lack of cleaning can be a problem for businesses that don’t have a lot of space or have a larger footfall of people using the facilities and the office in general.

Cleaning schedules should be accommodating to the size and demand in relation to the number of employees working.

For some businesses, the frequency of the clean might need to be every couple of hours or so, whereas other business properties might only need a cleaner to come in after office hours or before it opens for the day. Whichever one it is, make sure to set up the cleaning schedule so that it works well for the business and its cleaning needs.

    4. Declutter regularly and optimise storage

Decluttering the space can be a great help, and often is the case that a business can get cluttered up with belongings, from employees past and present.

With a declutter, make sure everyone gets involved, ideally with operations managing it from the beginning. By doing so, you’ll hopefully keep the spaces cleaner and more efficient when it comes to navigating the space.

The problem with businesses is that they can accrue a lot of clutter just from past employees leaving stuff behind. You may also want to consider shipping containers and storage facilities for off-site storage so that more room can be freed up in your workplace.

    5. Redesign the workspace and flow if it’s not working effectively

When it comes to navigating the space within your business, it’s good to look at redesigning the workspace and flow if it’s not efficient or working properly at this current moment in time.

If there are some pain points within the design of the workspace or flow of the rooms in general, look at how you could redesign them to improve their efficiency. There are always improvements to be made anyway.

    6. Approach decor and design with a minimalist view

Decor and design should be approached with a minimalist view so that you can maximise any space that you’re working with. The less furniture you have in the rooms, the more efficient they are when it comes to space and movement.

Take a look at what’s currently in the space and consider whether anything could be taken away to make for more room.

Freeing up space within your business is certainly beneficial. Start by following these tips to help free up space as a business this year and beyond.
